The League of Women Voters of McLean County will host its annual Fall Kickoff community program on Thursday, October 9 at 6:30 PM at the Bloomington Public Library. This years' program, A Conversation About Youth Civic Engagement, will shine a spotlight on the powerful role young people play in strengthening democracy.
Distinguished speakers will share their perspectives and experiences in engaging students and young adults in civic life.
- Lynda Minor and Rhonda Kirts from the League of Women Voters of Champaign County will present their Youth Ambassador Program.
- John Bierbaum, Normal West High School teacher, will discuss how he led an effort for students to serve as election judges at the November 2024 general election.
- Representatives from the Heartland Community College Service-Learning & Civic Engagement unit, Illinois State University Center for Civic Engagement, and Illinois Wesleyan University Action Research Center will discuss how they engage college students.
Panelists will highlight projects that connect young adults to civic participation -- from voter registration efforts to grassroots initiatives that build leadership skills and community involvement. There will be opportunities for Q&A.
"Today's students are tomorrow's leaders," said Chad Kahl, League of Women Voters of McLean County president. "By spotlighting their voices and their work, we hope to encourage deeper collaboration between community organizations and the next generation of engaged citizens."
The event is free and open to the public. Students, educators, and community members are encouraged to attend. Advance registration is requested at lwvmclean.org/youth.
