Our Water at Stake: Saving the Mahomet Aquifer

About this event

Our next community information program will focus on the Mahomet Aquifer, one of the most important environmental assets in Illinois.

The Mahomet Aquifer is the primary source of drinking water for more than 500,000 people in 14 Illinois counties. The Aquifer provides an estimated 220 million gallons of water per day to communities, industry, agriculture, and rural wells in Illinois (source: Town of Normal.)  According to the Town of Normal, "Should the quality of aquifer's water be compromised and become unusable, the remaining surface water resources would not be able to meet the daily demands of our growing region."

To bring us up to date on risks to the Aquifer, two presenters will join us:

  • Susan Adams is the chair of the Mahomet Aquifer Consortium, the Illinois Water Authority Association and serves on the Mahomet Aquifer Council. She testified before the McLean County Board regarding the resolution calling for legislative action on the Aquifer. Susan will help us understand why the Aquifer is so crucial to our future water supply and how CO2 drilling would affect the Aquifer.
  • Don Carlson is Executive Director of Illinois People’s Action, a 29 year old, multi-issue community organization active across downstate Illinois.  Don will discuss the politics of working to save the Aquifer.
Registration is recommended, to help with planning.

The program is free and open to the public.
