Study on Federal Judiciary
Need Members to Help

McLean County League members are needed to connect our chapter with the LWVUS in a study of the Federal Judiciary. Process, timeline, materials, and other resources have been developed by LWVUS and will be available to us.

The purpose of this study is to develop a LWV position on the Federal Judiciary as an essential component of US democracy.

The study will include, but is not limited to addressing concerns and clarifying judicial accountability, transparency, independence and ethics. The focus will include the Supreme Court as well as the other Article III federal courts.

Our local work will involve educating members on the study outcomes prior to a member consensus meeting in which we weigh in on a possible League position.

McLean County Board Members Sworn In

Congratulations to the newly elected and re-elected members of the McLean County Board who were sworn in on Monday, December 2. The Board elected Elizabeth Johnston (District 5) as Chairperson and Jim Rogal (District 4) as Vice Chairperson. This is the first time that Democrats have a majority on the Board (12-8).

Other actions approved were recombining the Transportation and Land Use Committees into a single committee and adopting some by-law changes. These included extending the aggregate time available for non-members to speak and adding "unexpected child care obligations" as a reason for a board member to attend a meeting remotely.

Retabulation of Ballots

After each election the Illinois State Board of Elections (SBE) requires election authorities to recount or re-tabulate all the ballots for selected precincts as a further verification of voting system accuracy.

This time around the SBE selected six precincts, one of which was the Eastland Mall early vote. The re-tabulation, performed on November 19, was going to take several hours during which election workers were to reinsert every ballot into the tabulation machines. Similar work is done on test ballots prior to each election as well.
