County Auditor Referendum Update

Laurie Bergner | Published on 10/12/2024
Our League has been busy advocating for a YES vote on the referendum to eliminate the elected office of county auditor.

We are recruiting our own members to write letters to the editor and agree to put yard signs in their yards.

In addition, we have also joined three other groups to endorse the effort: the McLean County Citizens for Government Accountability, the McLean County Farm Bureau, and the McLean County Mayors Association. The groups' endorsement of the referendum included a statement that passing the referendum would result in better county government, streamline the auditor's operations and save taxpayer money.

Our League put out a news release when we agreed to advocate for passing this referendum, and WGLT interviewed us which has aired.

This is a nonpartisan issue; and the McLean County Board voted unanimously to put this referendum on the ballot which was an uncommon event.

The League's advocacy gets triggered by nonpartisan issues that we believe will lead to better government. Our league has had a position on eliminating non-policy making offices for many years, holding that voters have difficulty assessing the functioning of such offices. Advocacy is a crucial part of our work and we are proud to do it!
