Phone Call Friday: After-Hours Advocacy That Makes An Impact

Beth Porter | Published on 2/14/2026

Join us for Phone Call Friday on Friday, April 24, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. at HOPE Church (1 Yount, Bloomington, IL). This League event is open to league members and also to members’ family—bring your teen, spouse, or another family member who wants to learn alongside you.

Phone Call Friday brings members together to learn about timely public issues, review clear talking points from trusted, nonpartisan sources, and make a small set of meaningful calls (1–3) to local elected officials—often by leaving voicemail messages.

Why calling after hours on a Friday is a smart strategy
Calling after office hours, especially on a Friday evening, can be one of the most effective and low-pressure ways to participate:

  • Voicemail makes it easy. You’re more likely to reach a recording than a live
staffer, which is great if you’re new to calling.
  • Your message is still counted. Voicemails create a documented record of
constituent input that offices can track and summarize.
  • It’s quick and clear. With prepared scripts, your message is accurate, consistent,
and takes just a minute or two.
  • Great timing. Messages left on Friday evening are often reviewed the next
business day—right as the week’s priorities are being set.

Issues we’ll have scripts for
Scripts and talking points will be available for calls related to:

  • Civil rights/Voting rights
  • Ignoring the rule of law and the Constitution
  • Congressional "power of the purse" (budget and oversight authority)
  • Immigration, involving both undocumented and legal residents
  • Equal branches of government, Congressional power of the purse

 What to expect

  • A brief, nonpartisan issue overview
  • Scripts and talking points provided (no prep needed)
  • Calls are optional - you can observe first if you prefer
  • You can choose whether to share your name/address -- we'll provide best practices for privacy and effective messaging
  • Snacks and water provided
