From Cutting Hair to Making History

Imagine being the first person to vote in the state of Illinois. David Strother, a barber, was just that person. Here’s your chance to learn more about Strother, the first person of color to cast his vote in the state. On Saturday, August 23, join other league members as we tour the Project XV Museum in El Paso.

There will be a presentation and video, followed by a self-guided tour of the museum. A docent will be available to answer questions. After the tour, we can gather at Java Café in downtown El Paso for a refreshing drink and a snack.

Here are the details for the tour:

Project XV Museum
1 Front Street, El Paso
Saturday, August 23
Tour begins at 1:30
Admission is $15/person; $8/person over 65 (pay at the door)

We will car pool to El Paso. Meet in the Schnuck’s parking lot in North Normal at 12:45. If you want to drive on your own, just meet us at the museum for the 1:30 start time.

RSVP below so we know how many cars we’ll need to drive to El Paso.
Hope you can join us for a little history and conversation.

League Fall Kick-Off Program Volunteers Needed!
Call for Volunteers by August 15

We are reaching out to invite you to be part of an exciting volunteer opportunity on Thursday, October 9, at the Bloomington Public Library for our League Fall Kick-Off. The name of this event will be updated to reflect its topic, Youth Civic Engagement, as it is open to the community and a great way to invite potential new members. More details will be coming soon.

This will be our first time hosting the Fall Kick-Off program at this venue, and your support is more important than ever. To ensure everything runs smoothly and successfully, we need a strong team of committed volunteers to help with planning, setup, and day-of coordination. Your time and effort will make a meaningful impact—and we truly can’t do it without you!

Please use this Sign-Up Genius Link to respond to this call for volunteers by August 15.

Music & Mingle
Music filled the air at Concerts on the Quad on Monday, July 21st. League members met up and enjoyed the music and each other.
