Our Water at Stake: Saving the Mahomet Aquifer
Next Education Meeting on Wednesday, April 9

Did you know the biggest environmental issue facing downstate Illinois is one most people aren’t aware of? The Mahomet Aquifer, that provides fresh water to nearly 1 million downstate residents, 100 communities and the Town of Normal, is threatened by proposed deep injection of CO2 and there is no alternative water supply!

The Illinois legislature is currently considering legislation to ban CO2 drilling below or adjacent to the aquifer.

We bring two presenters, Susan Adams and Don Carlson. Susan Adams is the chair of the Mahomet Aquifer Consortium, the Illinois Water Authority Association and serves on the Mahomet Aquifer Council. She testified before the McLean County Board regarding the resolution calling for legislative action on the Aquifer. Susan will help us understand why the Aquifer is so crucial to our future water supply and how CO2 drilling would affect the Aquifer. Don Carlson is Executive Director of Illinois People’s Action, a long-time, multi-issue community organization active across downstate Illinois. Don will be discussing the politics of working to save the Aquifer.

When: Wednesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Bloomington Public Library Community Room 1

Voting Yes on Countywide Sales Tax
Read LWV Statement of Support

On the April 1 election ballot, McLean County school districts are asking voters to adopt a 1% countywide sales tax. The revenue could be used for school facility improvements, school safety and security, mental health support, and other specific uses.

This ballot referendum reads as follows: Shall a retailers' occupation tax and a service occupation tax (commonly referred to as a sales tax) be imposed in the County of McLean, Illinois, at a rate of 1% to be used exclusively for school facility purposes, school resource officers, and mental health professionals? (Yes or No)

As part of our effort to educate voters, we offer this information on why we believe a "yes" vote on the referendum is justified.
