Congratulations to Laurie Wollrab for leading a very busy, successful year for the LWV of McLean County!
Laurie has been an organized, active President, fearless in pursuing the League’s mission of Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy.
We would often see her at Town Council, City Council, or County Board meetings; or as a guest on WGLT, speaking in support of or opposition to efforts that align or conflict with LWV positions.
It was a busy election year, and Laurie personally participated in numerous voter registration and postcard writing events to “get out the vote.” She advocated for a “no” vote on the SAVE Act to protect voting rights, attended candidate forums to educate the public, and poll watched to assure a fair and legal voting process.
This year’s work included determining our League’s positions on the McLean County Auditor Referendum, the McLean County School Facilities Sales Tax Referendum, and the LWVUS Federal Judiciary Study. Laurie then actively advocated for our positions.
Visibility is important in maintaining and growing our League. Laurie promoted us by being interviewed, writing letters to the editor, speaking to local organizations, and attending community events. She also lobbied for our positions in Washington, DC and in Springfield.

In addition to the more typical League work such as participating in Issues Briefings, Conventions, and monthly leadership meetings, this year has presented a unique opportunity. Led by LWVUS, all Leagues are encouraged to participate in political action. This creates a challenge of balancing our legendary nonpartisanship position with openly calling out actions that threaten democracy and rights of citizens. Laurie worked hard to find this balance, and participated in public actions either as an individual or on behalf of the League.
Of course, Laurie didn’t do everything by herself; many LWV members contributed to our accomplishments. And we appreciated Laurie’s inspirational leadership, guidance, and friendship. We are fortunate Laurie has agreed to serve as Treasurer on next year’s Board. We look forward to continue working with her.
With deep appreciation,
Board of the League of Women Voters of McLean County
