Consensus Meeting Result
Next Steps on 1% County Sales Tax

At the Feb. 25 Consensus Meeting, League members considered whether or not to take a public position on the 1% County School Facilities Sales Tax, which will be on the April 1 ballot. Our discussion focused on whether or not there was need for additional revenue for school facilities at this time, whether the county school districts had considered all funding options, and whether the sales tax increase proposed in the ballot referendum was the optimal solution.

After evaluating the information available and sharing a range of perspectives, we reached consensus on a public position encouraging a “yes” vote on the referendum.

Next steps include statements of support for a “yes” vote be publicized in future News Blasts, The Voter, our Facebook page, Instagram, and our website; Letters to the Editor (LTEs) representing the LWVMC from Jana Edge (Study Lead) and Faith Russell (Issues and Advocacy Director); encouragement of member LTEs written as private citizens, and a Statement of Support to be shared with community partners.

Contact Elected Officials on SAVE Act

The SAVE Act has passed the House and is now before the Senate. We must act to ensure it does not become the law of the land.

The SAVE Act requires all eligible voters to provide citizenship documentation to register to vote. Every American citizen would have to show specific documents in person, like a passport or an original birth certificate, when registering to vote and any time they update their voter registration.

Ostensibly, the intention of this act is to prevent noncitizens from voting. However, it is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote, and there are significant disincentives to try. Plus, we have robust processes to ensure that only eligible voters are casting ballots.
In effect, it will deter eligible voters from exercising their right. Affected will be women who change their names due to marriage or divorce, voters who move and need to re-register including senior citizens who move to independent or assisted-care facilities, and military voters who move as part of their deployments.

Americans do not need more obstacles to vote.Contact Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Tammy Duckworth to tell them the proposed SAVE Act is unacceptable.
